GREEN TRANSITION AND TECHNOLOGY DEFINE THE FUTURE OF FINNISH MARITIME INDUSTRY

The maritime industry is entering a decade of profound transformation. Climate targets, geopolitical shifts, digitalization, and rapid technological development are reshaping the way ships are designed, built, and operated. For Finland, these changes are not merely challenges to overcome – they are opportunities to strengthen our position as a global leader in maritime innovation.
The updated Strategic Research Agenda 2025 – 2035 published by Maritime Industries Finland presents an ambitious vision: by 2035, Finland will be the world’ s leading supplier of smart and environmentally sustainable maritime solutions. This is a bold objective, but one that is firmly grounded in the strengths of our maritime cluster.
Finnish companies, research institutions, and shipyards have long been recognized for their expertise in demanding vessel technologies, energy efficiency, and digital solutions. Today, that expertise is expanding rapidly into new areas, including autonomous shipping, artificial intelligence, advanced connectivity, and the development of low- and zero-emission fuels. These technologies are becoming essential as the global maritime sector seeks practical pathways toward decarbonization.
The transition will require substantial investments in research, development, and innovation. Success will depend on close cooperation between industry, academia, technology providers, and public stakeholders. Equally important is ensuring that the maritime sector continues to attract the highly skilled workforce needed to develop and deploy next-generation solutions.
While the challenges ahead are significant, the direction is clear. The green transition is no longer a future aspiration – it is a business reality that is already influencing investment decisions, regulations, and customer expectations worldwide. Companies that combine sustainability with technological leadership will be best positioned to succeed.
Finland has every opportunity to be among those leaders. By continuing to invest in innovation and by embracing emerging technologies, the Finnish maritime industry can help shape a cleaner, smarter, and more competitive future for global shipping. The coming decade will determine who leads that transformation – and Finland’ s expertise, collaborative ecosystem, and track record in demanding maritime solutions make it one of the strongest contenders.
